Lake Korission is a protected Natura 2000 wetland of exceptional ecological importance. The lagoon and its surrounding landscapes form a vital nature reserve dedicated to the preservation of local biodiversity. It is a renowned wildlife hotspot, with more than 126 recorded bird species, serving as an essential stopover for migratory birds such as flamingos, egrets, and cormorants. Beyond birdlife, the area is home to butterflies, turtles, and a variety of fish species.

The ecosystem is further distinguished by its dramatic sand dunes, some exceeding 15 meters in height, and a rare forest of prickly juniper (commonly known as cedar).
